Gracefully decline a job offer

Gracefully decline a job offerGracefully decline a job offerKeep it professional and theres nothing to be squeamish about when you turn down one job offer for another. Use this advice to explain your regrets. It sounds too good to be true. One highly touted job seeker welches hit with a perfect financial services storm job offers from Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase and Blackrock - all at the same time. This was the situation facing one client of career coach Connie Thanasoulis-Cerrachio, a partner at SixFigureStart and former head of staffing for Merrill Lynch Asset Management. Is it an embarrassment of riches to be presented with such wonderful opportunities in the wake of a auf der ganzen welt financial crisis? Sure, but this job seeker also had a difficult task on her hands. She had to turn down two of these three giants and do so in a way that protected her relationships and reputation at each.In an era where very few can afford to burn any bridges, she handled the matter gracefull y and honestly. In one case, she referred someone else for the position, said Thanasoulis-Cerrachio. In both cases, she explained why it was critical for her to accept the offer she did. Respect was felt all the way around.Respect is the ultimate goal when declining a job offer, said Ginny Clarke, author of Career Mapping Charting Your Course in the New World of Work.No one is taking this stuff personally, Clarke said. Dont lie. If you like another job more, be honest. She suggests contacting the hiring manager quickly and by phone - never in an e-mail - and offer specific reasons why another opportunity is a better fit for you, whether its the hours, schauplatz or industry trends. In the event that youre taking another offer because its a higher salary, it should be at least $10,000 more per year if youre going to use money as your official explanation. If its within that margin, Clarke suggests emphasizing a secondary reason during the call, such as stability or a clearer promotio nal path.Declining a job offer by phone this way is more professional and respectful, and provides an opportunity for an open exchange where you could give helpful feedback to the hiring manager. Then, you could follow up with him by sending your contact information at your new job.Theres nothing wrong with saying, Heres where I ended up, she said. Many job seekers feel squeamish about declining an offer after selling themselves during the interview process, but thats not a legitimate concern in a professional setting, Clarke said. It doesnt mean that youre disloyal. Its not about loyalty but it is about integrity. The Reputation IssueAs a recruiter, Clarke once had a candidate who was offered a job and then had a family emergency that meant he wouldnt be able to move there. The man was in a tough spot, but he chose to put family first and quickly explained his sensitive situation to the manager who offered him the job.She respected that about his character - that he made that decis ion, Clarke said. The man stayed in touch with the company and when his family matter stabilized months later, he reapplied to the company and got the job.Not all job seekers are so graceful. Another one of Clarkes candidates applied for a job without ever planning on accepting it. He was just playing her client in order to leverage a promotion with his current employer. It damaged his reputation, she said. Theres a reputation issue youre trying to maintain.

Opportunities for Working With Children

Opportunities for Working With ChildrenOpportunities for Working With ChildrenDo you find yourself drawn to little kids that you see in the park? Are you someone who gets called frequently to babysit because the kids just love to be around you? Do you have a little brother, sister, niece, or nephew that you enjoy spending time with and teaching them things that you enjoy? If so, then a career working with children may be the right one for you. There are many opportunities available for college students interested in working with kids. Students with an interest in education, counseling, social work, music, art, science, and museums, can find many internships and summer jobs available right in their own communities. Summer recreation programs offer students a chance to work with young children in the areas of art, sports, music, as well as providing opportunities for leading day trips to local historical sites and areas of interest.?? Summer camps are also a good way to gain experienc e working with children of all ages. There are many day and overnight camps available for children with special interests and needs. College students possessing a special talent may apply to camps to teach children a variety of skills. If you possess talents in the arts or music, what better way to use your talent than to share it and teach it to someone else? Overnight camps are great experiences for students interested in pursuing a career in education or psychology since children need ongoing support while they are living away from home. Many schools offer summer programs and seek college students to assist teachers. These experiences are excellent resume builders for anyone interested in going into education. Many museums also offer educational programs and provide learning experiences for children. In our college, we offer students an opportunity to work in the childcare center on campus as a way to get hands-on experience working with preschoolers. Students interested in psych ology, counseling, sociology, or social work may find internship opportunities at an agency that deals with improving the welfare, health, and safety of children. These experiences offer an opportunity to gain exposure in any of these areas of interest and provides relevant work experience for those who do go on to pursue a career in one of these career fields. For those students interested in traveling and gaining exposure to a different culture, there are many opportunities available for teaching abroad and for working for families who are looking for live in assistance. Being an au pair in a foreign country can provide unique experiences while spending time in a new culture and developing or improving on your foreign language skills. Working with children can be enormously satisfying, but it is not for everyone. If you know you love children, getting an internship or job in one of these areas is probably for you. If you are not sure, it is critical that you get some exposure work ing with children prior to making a career decision. Its also a good decision to work with different age groups to learn which group you enjoy most. Some students find that they just love preschool, but have no interest in working with children at the elementary level while others enjoy high school, but dont want to work with young children on a daily basis but, ironically, I dont find many students who opt to work with junior high students, and maybe thats because it brings them back to a time in their own life, that they rather not remember.

Sewage Sludge Power

Sewage Sludge Power Sewage Sludge Power Sewage Sludge PowerSewage sludge is on the rise in Europe. Wastewaters solid waste has to go somewhere and one of the easiest ways of dealing with the stuff is to incinerate it. But turning sludge to ash means adding an additional energy cost to the long chain of waste management needs. The largest sewage sludge incinerator in Europe is operated by Slibverwerking Noord-Brabant (SNB) in The Netherlands. The firm has transformed its plant into an energy-neutral one. To do so it turned to heat recovery steam generator specialists, NEM (which was acquired by Siemens in 2011).The incinerator was first built in 1997 and used low-pressure saturated steam to dry the sludge. At that time, the facility had an auxiliary boiler on hand to use in case of a steam shortage. But that boiler has never been used, because the heat from the sludge was higher than anticipated, so in fact they had an excess of steam, says Erwin Aalbers, NEM project manager. In 2012, S NB decided to try to put all that extra steam to use. According to their calculations, it was possible to reduce energy consumption to near zero if properly outfitted. Until that time, even though they were producing a small amount of power, they were a power consumer, they still needed electricity from the grid, says Aalbers. To win the bid for the job, NEM proposed turning two of the facilitys four lines of low-pressure steam to high-pressure lines. Such a switch to high pressure can seem like a sudden addition of risk to some, according to Aalbers. These plants may think its too complicated, might be a little bit afraid. They were used to 10 bars steam, all of a sudden they have 60, he says. But its still steam, its not rocket science. The sludge incineration process. Image SNBAn additional challenge was that the new boilers and turbines had to fit into the existing structure. It meant we had to look a bit further, outside our comfort level, and reduce the tube diameter to outside the regular range, says Aalbers. They also promised that they could finish the job in a mere 83 days and keep the plant burning sludge all the while. To do that (after winning the bid), they built a header that could connect to different branches and would ultimately be left in the facility unused. So in effect we started with a lot of additional equipment which is useless at this moment, says Aalbers. It was required for us to be flexible.NEM managed to complete the job early, and the new system powers itself, making it truly energy-neutral.Business for incinerators is likely to be booming in the coming years. Until recently, Germany has used about 30 percent of its sewage sludge as fertilizer. But now, because of the amount of heavy metals and other pollutants found in the material, the sludge cant legally be slathered on dirt. While a small portion of that could be shipped to SNB, Germany is planning on building its own incinerators that will produce a pure, uncontaminated ash. N ine percent of all sludge becomes ash, and about twenty percent of that is phosphorus, vital raw material. To learn how to best separate it from sludge, the Germans came to SNB.The only way to incinerate and recover phosphorus is by our technology, mono-incineration, says Marcel Lefferts, SNBs director. The mono of mono-incineration means the facility is used to incinerate nothing but sludge. They took a tour of the plant as a showcase of good practice of sludge treatment, looking for advice from our side.Currently only two of SNBs lines use high-pressure steam. Tax laws in the Netherlands currently make energy production fiscally tricky, but they may be changing soon. If so, the plant could convert their two low-pressure lines to high-pressure and produce about 3.5 megawatts. Already they are planning to install a new generator set that will make them a net producer of energy. That may not make sludge the green energy source of choice for powering the entire planet, but, For SNB, it would be very helpful for reducing the cost for sludge incineration, says Aalbers.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Learn about the latest energy solutions at ASMEs Power Energy Conference and Exhibition For Further Discussion Even though they were producing a small amount of power, they were a power consumer, they still needed electricity from the grid.Erwin Aalbers, NEM project manager

Predictions for the Workplace in 2018

Predictions for the Workplace in 2018Predictions for the Workplace in 2018If you are currently interviewing for a job and wonder what is exactly happening in todays work culture, these predictions for the workplace in 2018 will be a great help for you. If you are thinking of leaving your job, you may even see a trend for 2018 that will cause you to keep your job.1. Older workers will participate more in the workplaceThe Bureau of Labor Statistics explains the workforce in 2018 will start to see more participation from older workers.By 2018, almost all the baby boomers will be in the 55-years-and-older age group. Age is a major factor in labor market behavior, and the aging of the labor force will dramatically lower the overall labor force participation rate and the growth of the labor force. - Bureau of Labor StatisticsThe United States population is growing, living longerand healthier, which means the over labor force is projected to reach 167 million by 2018. mora so, the workforce is becoming more diverse than ever before in terms of age, race, and gender, with the older workforce retiring later than ever before.2. Business leaders will encourage more human interactionPeople need people. Face to face social interaction is proven to keep the brain healthier and for a longer period of time. Companies will design their workplaces to encourage more interpersonal relationships between coworkers. This may also lead to a decline in remote workers to encourage more team collaboration in-person.Why? Some of the biggest companies in the world are (re)discovering that when employees interact in physical environments, it inspires creativity and relationship building. Research this year also showed millennials and Gen Z employees preferred interacting face to face more than through devices and technology.Technology has proven to increase productivity, but people still enjoy working with people more than devices.3. Big change in acceptable learning credentialsDo you remem ber when the thought process was, If you do not have a college degree you are limiting your opportunities? Things are changing on that end due to the growth of online academies that offer all the same course materials. But unlike those who attendcollege, those with online educations are more self-directed and disciplined. Companies are discovering that students of colleges and online academies possess equal knowledge. The bigger difference is that those who learned on their own do not get hiredwhile carrying a cargo of student loan debt. As such, the self-taught employee does not fear unemployment as much as the college grad with debt.4. Focus on training current workers for new relevant skillsWith all the negative attention focused on how automation is hurting jobs in the US, it is easy to forget that there are still nearly six-million jobs unfilled in the US. Companies are not finding workers with the relevant skill set. This hurts small businesses mostly who need to find qualified job candidates to stay in business. leid having the right employees can cost companies annually in productivity (or lack of). More important, a skill learned today is outdated within five years due to the speed of change in todays business world. As a solution, companies discovered through research that the majority of best-performing organizations (84%) train for new skills. They discovered when teams are appropriately trained, companies actually SAVE money and increases productivity.5. Artificial intelligence enters the workplaceThe devices used around the home like personal assistants will be used in the workplace as a way to support staff, tasks, and increase productivity. The more this trend takes off at the top with companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon, the more it will be adopted by all companies.6. Focus on mental and financial wellnessAlmost 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. The stress affects their health and their ability to be productive. More so, it hurt s their job satisfaction and all of this hurts the company because sick workers miss work days.As a solution, many of the largest companies around the world are helping employees figure out ways to pay back student loans, ease financial burdens, and get control of their finances. This is more than just a nice thing to do and Human Resources will be taking it seriously. Why? In 2017, more than 80% of employees dealt with physical, psychological, and behavioral symptoms caused by poor mental health. Depression and anxiety symptoms can result in missed work days and reduced productivity, costing the US more than 200 million lost work days annually.7. Workplace decisions impact customer spendingCompanies are discovering through data research that poor treatment of job candidates impacts if these job candidates and their friends will spend money on that company.Simply put, a job candidate who is treated poorly during the interview process will never buy goods from the company. Yes, job ca ndidate experiences actually influence consumer behavior. It makes them less likely to purchase goods and services from their employer. Most importantly, for those who fill out job applications and never hear back, research shows 58% of employees are less likely to buy from a company if they dont get a response to their job application.8. Diversity will be taken seriouslyThe topic of diversity in the workplace is now at its tipping point. It is obvious that social media can impact a companys bottom-line. We have already seen that some states have passed laws outlawing requests for salary history. And the demand for diversity in the workplace has been in place for decades.More companies will create resource groups to support all types of diversity and the game-changing companies in Silicon Valley will make major strides next year to promote diversity, as these companies currently have less than 5% of an African American workforce.ConclusionSuffice it to say the United States labor mar ket has been in a constant state of agitation for many years. It looks like 2018 will be a breakout year for all those who have been dealing with inequality and stress for many years. This should be a turnaround year for sure

Do you want to work for Amazon.com, or another company that cares These 15 jobs need to be filled ASAP bit.ly/2mOyk3m We need gender neutral dress codes in the workplace. If you dont yet agree with that statement, look no farther than a 55-page presentation given to women executives at Ernst Young in a June 2018 training. pThe presentation, which made headlines last month when an offended participant a href=https//www.huffpost.com/entry/women-ernst-young-how-to-dress-act-around-men_n_5da721eee4b002e33e78606a target=_blankleaked it to the Huffington Post/a, reinforced gendered stereotypes of how women should dress and present themselves at work. Some highlights, which are actually lowlights in terms of equality in the workforce/pul class=ee-ul ee-ulliA list of appearance blunders for women to avoid, including no-nos like too-short skirts, plunging necklines, bottle blonde, flashy jewelry/liliOutfit and grooming suggestions to minimize distractions from your skills sic set like good haircut, manicured nails, and well-cut attire/liliAdvice on how to dress dont flaunt your body sexuality scrambles the mind/li/ulpThe women, there to invest in their professional development, were not learning how to be better leaders or combat sexist stereotypes at work, but instead were being lectured to about what to wear and how to groom themselves./ppWhile the presentation wasnt the official EampY dress code, it does highlight bias and assumptions made around gender that women have to manage. And this particular training focused only on the male-female binary. Employees who identify as transgender or nonbinary might feel even more burdened by dress code policies based on gender. /ppImagine how much more productive all employees, regardless of gender, could be, if they werent focused on avoiding dress code policing./ppTraditional gender-based dress codes can also discriminate on the basis of race. Many grooming guidelines for women, including rules on acceptable haircuts, are extra burdens for black employees, particularly those who want to wear their hair in natural styles. a href=https//daily.jstor.org/how-natural-black-hair-at-work-became-a-civil-rights-issue/ target=_blankIn 2010, Chastity Jones got a job offer/a to be a customer service representative from Catastrophe Management Solutionsbut the offer was contingent on her cutting off her locs. When she refused, the company took back the job offer, and when she sued, with the help of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, she lost her case in 2013 and again in 2016, when her appeal was dismissed. /ppAnd beyond forcing women of color to maintain their hair in a way thats deemed acceptable, gender-based dress codes can also discriminate against people of certain religions. Employees whose faiths keep them from cutting their hair or necessitate that they wear certain clothing (including head coverings) shouldnt be forced to adapt their beliefs to what their employer deems professionally appropriate for a woman at work./ppThe possibility for gender-, race-, and faith-based discrimination posed by prescriptive employee dress codes has a href=https//www.hrc.org/resources/workplace-dress-codes-and-transgender-employees target=_blankled the Human Rights Campaign to recommend/a that if an employer has a dress code, it should modify it to avoid gender stereotypes and enforce it consistently. Requiring men to wear suits and women to wear skirts or dresses, while legal, is based on gender stereotypes. Alternatively, codes that require attire professionally appropriate to the office or unit in which an employee works are gender-neutral./ph3Okay, So Gender Neutral Dress Codes Sound Good. What Do They Look Like?/h3pIn their simplest (which, in my opinion, also means best) form, gender neutral dress codes at the workplace can take the form of General Motors dress policy. When now-CEO Mary Barra was VP of global human resources for the automotive giant, a href=ht tps//qz.com/work/1242801/gms-dress-code-is-only-two-words/ target=_blankshe replaced their 10-page dress code with two words/a Dress appropriately. /ppIn the article linked above, the author explains why Barras dress code works so well She avoided assumptions, instead choosing to trust her employees judgment, which in turn empowered all employees and was particularly impactful for women. /ppFor workplaces that need more specificity about what employees can wear, HR should follow in the footsteps of other institutions that have successfully adopted gender-neutral dress codes. Namely, high schools./ppAfter a wave of protests, social media outrage, and thoughtful advocating, a href=https//www.dispatch.com/news/20180919/more-schools-revamping-sexist-dress-codes target=_blankseveral schools have revamped their dress codes/a, which tended to put undue burden on female students. How to make the right decision Ask this question

How to make the right decision Ask this questionHow to make the right decision Ask this questionStuck making a decision? You are not alone. Making decisions makes most people afraid. Even leaders fear the consequences of making the wrong call. Either because they want to protect their position or lack the courage to challenge the status-quo - leaders avoid taking risks. The problem with playing it too safe is that it has consequences also. Inaction can be more harmful than making a decision that is not perfect.Stop thinking about right or wrong. Making decisions requires clarity, not certainty. Asking one question will get you unstuck. Is it safe to try?The problem with decisions is that we are afraid of consequences that, in most of the cases, are either unclear or not real.A safe to try approach helps dedramatize decision making and move you into action. It will give you the clarity to make the call. And the confidence to pull the trigger when others are afraid of failing.According t o neuroscience, decisions are emotional, not logical. You should listen to your gut and heart too, not just your brain. When you let your fears speak up, you stop listening to your common sense.Risk-avoidance is the most significant paradox of decision-making. Analysis helps eliminate unnecessary options. But making decisions requires taking risks.Making a choice is saying yes to the consequences too.Stop looking for the right decisionTheres no such a thing as a perfect decision. A right decision made at the wrong time wont do you any good either. The perfect time to make decisions is now.Its okay to take time and reflect. However, if you are letting something stew forever, you are just procrastinating. The best way to minimize risk is to make decisions in small doses.Safe-to-try decisions drive action rather than waiting for the perfect solution to arrive. They will help you choose a path, and then course correct based on real feedback rather than getting stuck by the fear of antici pation.Perfectionism is the enemy of change, as I wrote here.Safe-to-try decisions are not perfect but they drive action, unlike indecision. To evaluate if a proposal should be accepted or rejected, consider the following with your gruppeWill the decision move the team backward? Will the proposal, if implemented, cause harm which can not be mitigated promptly? This Litmus test helps validate the proposal but also avoids personal bias and speculation. People are asked if they have any objection (not opinions). Objections need to be based on facts and information in the present, not on possible future tensions. If no real objections are presented, the proposal is considered safe-to-try and the team can implement it.Safe-to-try is an effective method becauseInaction can be more harmful than a decision that is not perfectDecisions are never definite, unlike analysis/paralysisYou can always course correct based on real-life feedbackIt builds a habit of making small dose decisionsIt removes worrying about what you dont know - you focus on what you knowWhats the worst thing that can happen? Thats what you need to keep in mind. In most of the cases, the answers wont be strong enough to stop the team from trying something new. fruchtwein objections are not that solid, once you start probing them.Stop waiting for the perfect decision. Embrace an experimental mindset. Think of your decisions as in beta form - they can always be improved.Realizing that you cannot anticipate the future is liberating. We were trained and wired to pretend we know everything to be in control. But, more often than not, things take a life of their own.The magic of the safe-to-try method is demystifying decision-making. However, commitment still plays a significant role. Theres no room for fears or second thoughts. Even small-dose decisions need to be treated seriously. The best decision is the one you make with determination.Take the plunge. Thats the first step. Action drives excitement. You ca n improve your decision in beta form.- - - In business, if you realize youve made a schwimmbad decision, you change it. - Richard Branson said about the polemic Brexit. The Virgin Group CEO believes there should be a second vote on the issue - Nothing is definite.Thats the spirit behind safe-to-try decisions. You can always course correct. This approach was originally created by Holacracy self-management practice to move teams into action. However, you can also apply it to personal decisions. Ask yourself is it safe to try?Make a list of all the potential issues.emotions. Are they based on facts or fears? Remove the objections that are real. Take the plunge. If you are not taking risks, you are not making a decision. You are just playing safe by procrastinating making the call. These are the 5 best books of 2018 according to Bill Gates

These are the 5 best books of 2018 according to Bill Gates These are the 5 best books of 2018 according to Bill Gates We know Bill Gates is an immense reader.   He  reads about 50 books per year  which means he averages about one per week. And not only is he reading about them, but then he is  writing recommendations for them on his blog, GatesNotes,  and encouraging the world to adopt his vociferous appetite for books. Now he has come up with his best of the best list for the year 2018 so you too can be as successful as Bill Gates (well probably not but at least now you’ll have something to talk about if you ever meet him.)Here are his five recommendations.Educated  by Tara WestoverThe New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-seller is a beautiful coming of age story that dares us to ask the question ‘How much of ourselves should we give to those we love?’Army of None by Paul ScharreNot a light read as it focuses on a defense experts exploration of giving machines all the authority. Science magazine wrote of it, “[E]ngagingly detailed…Scharre offers an authoritative and sobering perspec tive on the automated battlefields that will very soon come to characterize military conflict.”Bad Blood  by John CarreyrouNot to be confused with the popular Taylor Swift song (though it does center on a celebrated blond)  investigative journalist Carreyrou gets down to the nitty gritty truth about Theranos and its many shady operations. The number one problem? The product never worked but founder Elizabeth Holmes couldn’t let it go and kept taking money from investors.  â€œYou will not want to put this riveting, masterfully reported book down. No matter how bad you think the Theranos story was, you’ll learn that the reality was actually far worse,”  Bethany McLean, bestselling coauthor of  The Smartest Guys in the Room  and  All the Devils Are Here, wrote.  21 Lessons for the 21st Century  by Yuval Noah HarariSuch a profound and modern philosopher, Harari now takes on what dictates our future with an in-depth look at  nationalism, religion, immigration, artificial intellig ence and many other important topics. “The trick for putting an end to our anxieties, he suggests, is not to stop worrying. It’s to know which things to worry about, and how much to worry about them. . . .  Harari is such a stimulating writer that even when I disagreed, I wanted to keep reading and thinking. . . . [Harari] has teed up a crucial global conversation about how to take on the problems of the twenty-first century,” Gates wrote of the book. The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness  by Andy Puddicombe In today’s busy world, who couldn’t use a little meditation and mindfulness including Gates?  â€œIf you’re thinking about trying mindfulness, this is the perfect introduction. It’s also helped me step back and get some ease with whatever thoughts or emotions are present,” he wrote. If you are looking for more reads  here are all 185 books  Gates has recommended over the years, according to Quartz.  In an interview with  The New York Times  Gates said reading is one of his main tools for learning.  â€œThese days, I also get to visit interesting places, meet with scientists, and watch a lot of lectures online,” he explained.  â€œBut reading is still the main way that I both learn new things and test my understanding.”

Resumonk - Reflections on the first month of my startup

Resumonk - Reflections on the first month of my startup Resumonk - Reflections on the first month of my startup It is really hard to believe that it has been over a month since I launched Resumonk. What started as a project to teach myself some programming has now helped over four thousand people create their resume.  There are also a lot of updates that I would like to share so I thought I would summarize the stats so far before sharing some of the updates and newer features that I have been working on. For an app with zero marketing budget, I think these are great numbers so I would really like to thank everyone who has thought it worthwhile to spread the word about Resumonk. I am also grateful to everyone who gave me their suggestions and inputs and I am sorry for any delays in replying to your emails. Now lets take a look at the updates and features that I have pushed over the last month. Cleaner UI added the ability to minimize/maximize certain fields in the resume form to avoid having to scroll all the way to the bottom and the ability to clone a resume. More fields added fields for Projects, Publications and Volunteering work. Template editor added a drag-and-drop mechanism for re-ordering your resume and also added the ability to change your resumes color scheme. Custom URL you can now change your resume url to have your name in it instead of a random string (eg:resumonk.com/r/bharani ) I guess thats it for now. I will keep updating this blog with the modifications and additions that I make to Resumonk. Please share your thought and ideas through the comments. If you are more comfortable with email, drop me a line at bharani91[at]gmail.com. I would love to hear your suggestions and feedback.

Find Contacts at Your Target Companies Find Your Dream Job

Find Contacts at Your Target Companies â€" Find Your Dream Job Find Contacts at Your Target Companies - Find Your Dream Job On Day 13, you created an employer target list with 10 - 20 companies that you would love to work for. A great way to increase your chances of getting a job interview at a dream company is to have a contact who works there. So today, you will use a variety of techniques to find connections at your target companies, and reach out to them. How Contacts Can Help Your Job Search Having a contact at a company (whether a current or former employee) is a great way to get your foot in the door. A contact will be able to help your candidacy for employment in a variety of ways. Contacts can alert you to job opportunities that might not be listed online. They can also personally mention you to a hiring manager, or (depending how well they know you and your work) write a personal recommendation for you. Even simply mentioning your connection at the company in your cover letter can help move you along in the hiring process. How to Find Contacts Here are some techniques for finding contacts at your target companies. Follow your target companies on their LinkedIn Company Pages. The page will list all of your LinkedIn connections at each company. It will also list your second-degree connections (people who are connected to your connections), which might help you find other acquaintances.Search Facebook Groups by each company name. Some companies have Facebook Groups for current and former employees. Look at these lists, and see if you have any Facebook friends in these groups.Use Twellow to search for Twitter contacts by industry or by specific company. If you are a college student or graduate, contact your career services office or alumni office. These offices typically have databases of alumni and/or parents who are willing to help with career networking. Search the database by industry or company name to find potential contacts. How to Reach Out to Your Contacts Reach out to your contacts at each dream company, expressing your interest in the company and asking if they can help. You can ask to meet up for coffee for an informational interview about the company. If you are LinkedIn contacts, ask if the contact would be willing to write you a LinkedIn recommendation. Here are some sample letters asking for help from network contacts. Give Back Networking is not a one-way street. If you ask for a LinkedIn recommendation, be sure to offer to write one for the other person. If your connections need advice or referrals in the future, return the favor. A career network only works when you are willing to give help and advice as well as receive it.

Signs you just got professionally ghosted

Signs you just got professionally ghosted Signs you just got professionally ghosted Hi again. Just circling back. Did you see my last email? I wanted to quickly follow up. Let me know when you have a chance. Most of us are all too familiar with ghosting in our personal lives, whether it’s the stereotypical Tinder connect who evaporates or a friend who never follows through with weekend plans. But then there’s ghosting at work, a trend that’s not exactly new but that’s uniquely annoying every time it happens. You know the drill. You need something from a colleague, and even though you know they’re on their computer all day, every day, somehow you’re supposed to believe that they just haven’t read your email from three days ago yet? Here are a few of the most common ghosting situations, along with our best tips to finally get a response back- or at least try to.When you’re interviewing for a jobSign You’ve Been GhostedZero response to your thank-you note or second follow-up.How to Address ItIf you’ve only sent a  single thank-you note after your inter view, you could give it one last shot with a follow-up note that expresses (again) how interested you are. They might still be interviewing and just haven’t gotten back.If you’ve already done that, it’s time to take a cue from standard dating advice: move on. They’re just not that into you, and that’s OK. There’s another company out there that will fall in love with you (and email you back). When someone owes you something for a projectSign You’ve Been GhostedOne (or two or three…) emails asking for something and still no response. How to Address ItIf you’re in the same office, go see them and ask. We’ve gotten pretty comfortable hiding behind computer screens, but it’s a lot harder to look someone in the eye when you owe them something and not feel motivated to give it to them. If that’s not going to work in your situation, another good move (especially after a second or third email) is to CC a supervisor on the chain on another check-in. This is only a trick to be used in an incredibly flaky context- but trust us, people get back fast. When you ask the team for help - and no one volunteersSign You’ve Been GhostedYou email a few coworkers asking if anyone can help you with a presentation, but absolutely no one responds. How to Address ItYou could send a follow-up email reminding everyone that you’re still waiting for a volunteer, and you might hear back- but most likely someone will write back out of guilt only to give an excuse on why they can’t help you.Skip the in-between step and go straight to the source. We like to email people individually (they’re more likely to get back to that than to the mass email) or, better yet, to stop by their desk and say, “Hey, I know I sent an email the other day but didn’t hear back from you.” Either way, the best way to handle it is to acknowledge why they don’t want to do it, e.g. “I know that it’s not exactly a fun thing and I’m sure you’ve got a ton of stuff on your plate, b ut I’m really getting desperate. Could you help me? I’ll owe you one.” Everybody loves an office IOU.When you ask for a networking introductionSign You’ve Been GhostedYou ask if your coworker/boss/friend can introduce you to someone in their network, they maybe even say, “Sure, I’ll look up their contact for you” and then you never hear anything back. How to Address ItThis varies person-to-person but you’ve got two possibilities here: one is that the person you asked is a capital F Flake, the other is that they don’t want to do it. So which one are they?If she’s a Flake, follow up again and one more time after that. Underscore how important it is to you and how much you’d appreciate it. Sprinkle a lot of “pleases” and “you’re my hero” statements in there. Hope for the best.If you suspect she doesn’t want to do it, ask yourself honestly why. Is it awkward for her? In many cases, that’s the most common answer- just because you want the contact inform ation doesn’t mean she’s comfortable sharing it. If that’s the case, follow up one time and then drop it. Find another way to get introduced or try reaching out to the contact cold on LinkedIn. That might work just as well. When someone’s missed a deadlineSign You’ve Been GhostedUm, the work they owe you isn’t here. How to Address ItHead on. Email and say something like this:Hi [Name],  Checking in on the status of [The Late Project] since I was hoping to have that by [Insert the Missed Deadline]. Could you give me an update on where you’re at and when I can expect to have it by?  If they still don’t respond, try our favorite last-ditch effort solution: cc your/their boss on another follow-up.When you do someone a favor and ask for a favor backSign You’ve Been GhostedLet’s just use a Career Contessa example, shall we? You interview a woman from a big name brand, and you share that interview on all your social channels. You email her PR team asking them to share it with their network as well, and … nothing. How to Address ItEven if you wish it worked differently, you do something for someone just to do it. Unless you had an agreement that they would return the favor in a specific way at a specific time, the most you can do is email once more asking if they could help you with XYZ project. Tell them it would mean a lot to you without pointing fingers (“I did this for you already”). If they don’t get back, remember that the next time they ask you for a favor. When someone’s doing bad workSign You’ve Been GhostedYou give an employee or coworker feedback about some poor performance and suddenly, they’re phoning it in on their work. Barely. How to Address ItAgain, head on is best. (Seeing a pattern here?) Many a passive-aggressive battle is waged in the break room, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep it classy. Ask them if you can chat for five minutes and point out that you’ve noticed things feel a bit strained. Use a specific ex ample or two if you have them. Then ask for whatever it is that you need.By the way, if you’re their boss and they’re now doing badly  and  ignoring your requests and feedback, this is all documentation you can use if/when you let them go. Because let’s be real, a professional ghoster who also does a bad job? Not exactly long-term employee material. This article was originally published on Career Contessa.

Learn About Consultative Selling Techniques

Learn About Consultative Selling Techniques Learn About Consultative Selling Techniques Developed in the 1970s, consultative selling really came into its own in the 1980s and is still popular today. In consultative selling, the salesperson acts as an adviser (or consultant) by collecting information on a prospects needs and then presenting him with a solution. Generally consultative selling is a “warm and friendly” approach, using little or no hard selling. The idea is that by the time you reach the end of the sales process the close is almost automatic, since youre able to show exactly how your product meets the prospects  needs. What Consultative Selling Is Consultative selling techniques are based on the methods used by professional consultants. Think how a doctor or a lawyer treats a client. They usually start by sitting down and asking a series of questions about the clients history, then a more specific series of questions about the current problem. Then they combine this information with their professional knowledge and come up with a plan to solve the problem. The first step is to do some advance research. If the prospect didnt have a problem, she wouldnt have bothered to set up an appointment with you, so the trick is learning the specifics. However, many prospects wont want to answer a long series of questions from a stranger. Finding out as much information as possible ahead of time will help you to get started without taking up a lot of the prospects time (or making him feel like youre interrogating him). Good sources of information include customer records (for existing customers) and online resources like Google, LinkedIn and Facebook. Gathering Data Once youve gathered as much data as you can, its time to meet with the prospect and get some more specific information. The key is to present yourself as a problem-solver from the start. After you introduce yourself at the appointment, say something like, “Mr. Prospect, I consider myself a problem-solver â€" my job is to determine the best product for your needs. So Ill need to ask you a few basic questions about your current situation. May I take a few minutes of your time to collect this information?” Then the prospect wont be surprised when you start asking him a series of often personal questions. Building Rapport Building rapport is the second critical part of any consultative selling technique. Prospects need to trust in your expertise, or your advice will be worthless to them. You should develop and maintain a solid base of knowledge about your industry. For example, if you sell server hardware you should know the difference between Linux and Windows server software and the pros and cons of each. If youre a B2B salesperson and sell mainly to customers in one industry, then you should know the basics about that industry as well. Then you can convey your knowledge by the nature of the questions you ask and/or by how you respond to the prospects answers. Once you fully understand the prospects current situation and the problems that hes facing, its time to present him with the solution. If youve qualified the prospect well then your product will almost always be at least a partial solution to the prospects problems. All you need to do is show the prospect how that will happen. Presenting a Solution Presenting the solution is usually a two-part process. First, state the problem as you understand it. Say something like, “Mr. Prospect, you mentioned that your server crashes on a regular basis and has had frequent problems with denial-of-service attacks. Is this correct?” By asking for confirmation, you can clear up any misunderstandings and also offer the prospect a chance to clarify the problem further. When you both agree on the nature of the problem, step two is showing the prospect how your product is a good solution for this particular problem. If youve done your homework, asked intelligent questions, stated the problem correctly and shown how your product fits the prospects needs, theres a good chance that you just closed the sale. If the prospect hesitates at this point, you probably goofed somewhere along the way. You can still recover by asking a few probing questions to determine the prospects objection, then restarting the selling process at that point.

Morning Motivation Tips to Help You Get Out of Bed

Morning Motivation Tips to Help You Get Out of Bed Morning Motivation Tips to Help You Get Out of Bed Not everyone is a morning person. Even if you do consider yourself a morning person, there are certainly days when you’d rather stay in bed when you really need to get going. If you’re a night owl, it can be even harder to get  your day started. It’s not feasible for everyone, of course, but there are jobs that offer a perfect schedule for night owls who simply can’t do days. Morning Motivation Tips to Get Your Day Off to the Right Start For those who have to get up in the morning to go work, get the kids off to school, or to do whatever else is on the agenda, there are other options. It’s not always  necessary to look forward to your mornings, but you can at  least  get your day off to a better start. Making a few adjustments can make your mornings far less unpleasant, and for some people, a couple of key changes can make mornings their favorite part of the day. 1. Get Enough Sleep Is it really hard for you to wake up and get out of bed? If you find mornings unpleasant, the main reason may be  that you are not getting enough sleep to start with. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most people need between 6 - 9 hours of sleep every night. If you are especially behind on sleep, you might need to adjust the times you rise and go to bed to get more sleep.  There are a some different ways you can try to get more sleep: Try waking up at the same time every day (including weekends) to help stabilize your circadian rhythm.Get sunlight on your skin and eyes (avoid looking directly at the Sun of course!) in the morning, which helps your body create the right hormones at the right time for wakefulness and sleep.Make it a point to slow down your evenings much earlier, including finishing your evening meal at least four hours before bedtime.  Take away screens (the blue light from your TV and phone impair your ability to get sleep) at least 30 minutes from when you want to go to bed.   If you have trouble falling asleep, consider using sleep aid supplements, such as melatonin.  Avoid strenuous exercise within four hours of bedtime, as this can disrupt sleep hormone production. Many people also find white noise from a phone app or a fan soothing and relaxing as they try to fall asleep. 2. Create Routines It is not just your morning routine that matters when helping yourself to  wake up in the morning. What you do in the evenings before retiring to bed is just as important.  For example, if you make it a routine to pick up clutter  and  clean  mess  around your house before going to bed, you will wake up to a clean living space. This does wonders for helping you to  feel refreshed and empowered in the morning. In the morning, if you enjoy easing into your day with a good book and a hot beverage, make it a routine. Create a breakfast nook and keep a good book on the table waiting for you each morning. 3. Open the Blinds Humans have circadian rhythms: in fact, most of us call our natural response to light and dark our internal body clock. So, the sooner you can open your blinds/curtains around the house, the better your body will feel in the morning. Depending on your housing and climate, you might consider spending a little time outside. Put some plants outside your door and plan to water them each morning. Enjoy your coffee outside. Adopting these activities as morning rituals can focus your energy and motivate you to get moving. 4. Listen to Music If you set an alarm for yourself, there is rarely a sound available  that feels enjoyable to wake to in the morning. Once you are up, put on some pleasant music that you enjoy. 5. Engage Your Senses Do you enjoy good smells? Buy some fragrant candles or use essential oils around the house. Engaging your sense of smell will energize you in the morning. If you enjoy hot showers, plan to take one most mornings, even if only to enjoy the feeling of warm water on your skin. You might try finishing with a cold shower to enliven you and boost your metabolism. If you’re a foodie, plan your breakfasts ahead of time and cook yourself a nice meal. Fix yourself your favorite flavor of coffee or tea. The more senses that you can engage in a positive way,  the better  you  will  feel about your mornings. 6. Exercise For many, the idea of morning exercise is an unhappy prospect, but it doesn’t have to be. Doing yoga or brisk walks can be enough to get your metabolism going properly. If you enjoy exercise, consider taking morning jogs, or getting up a little earlier to hit the gym. You might feel sore and tired at first, but if you keep at it, you will gradually feel more rested after your sleep and more excited to begin your day.  7. Plan Your Day Slowing down, taking a breath, and remembering what is most meaningful to you can help keep you centered and awake to what the day ahead may bring. Set aside 15 minutes to plan out your day with a notebook. Some people like to use paper calendars while others prefer to use To do lists. If you prefer using digital tools over pen and paper, there is an app for almost any kind of day planning that you can imagine. Regardless of how you do it, taking stock of what you need to accomplish in the day will help you  to  remain proactive and less reactive to the day’s surprises. Its much easier to have a productive day when you’re organized and have planned what you need to accomplish. When You Need More Help Difficult mornings can be a symptom of something deeper. It’s possible that not every painful part of your morning can be solved by one of the solutions above. If you find mornings especially challenging, talk to your doctor about some tests to identify whether you are suffering from a treatable condition,  for  which  treatment could dramatically improve how you feel in the morning.Medicating yourself to sleep. Talk to your doctor if you find that you are unable to fall asleep or sleep soundly at night. There are a number of non-addictive sleep prescription medications that your doctor might feel are a good fit for your situation.

3 crucial skills for leading without authority

3 crucial skills for leading without authority 3 crucial skills for leading without authority With flatter management structures, increased outsourcing, the move toward collaborative cultures, and the ongoing formation of cross-functional teams, the criterion for the job of leader is changing. More and more people are assigned to leadership roles in which they have no positional authority. The goal of leadership without authority is to get others to willingly cooperate and engage, rather than following directives because you’re the boss. And, by the way, if you are the boss, the rules have changed for you too. As one Silicon Valley CEO told me: “Carol, there is absolutely nothing wrong with command and control leadership. It’s simply irrelevant in the 21st century.”In contrast to control-minded leaders of the past, today’s most effective leaders are exercising a different kind of power. This new style of leadership is a blending of personal and interpersonal skills that form the basis of a leader’s ability to impact, influence, and inspire others. Here are three of those skills:1. Empathetic listeningDevelopment Dimensions International has studied leadership for 46 years. In their latest research with over 15,000 leaders from more than 300 organizations across 20 industries in 18 countries, DDI looked at leaders’ conversational skills that had the highest impact on overall performance. At the very top of the list was empathy â€" specifically, the ability to listen and respond empathetically. In his book, On Becoming a Person, psychologist Carl Rogers wrote, “Real communication occurs when we listen with understanding â€" to see the idea and attitude from the other person’s point of view, to sense how it feels to them, to achieve their frame of reference in regard to the thing they are talking about.”A further discovery in the DDI report was that only four out of ten leaders in their global study were proficient or strong in empathy. And the rate may be even lower in the newest generation of leaders. A study by the University of Michiga n found that the empathy levels of college students have been declining over the past 30 years â€" with an especially steep drop in the past ten years. As a leader, if you already rank high in empathy, you gain a genuine professional advantage. If not, empathetic listening is a skill worth developing.2. Warm body languageThere are two sets of body language cues that people look for in leaders. One set projects warmth and caring and the other signals power and status. Both are necessary for leaders today and both will be critical to the success of leaders in the future. But in your role as Chief Influencer, the “warmer side” of nonverbal communication (which has been undervalued and underutilized by leaders more concerned with projecting strength, status, and authority), becomes central to creating the most productive workforce relationships. The body language of inclusion and warmth includes positive eye contact, genuine smiles, and open postures in which legs are uncrossed, and arms are held away from your body, with palms exposed or resting comfortably on the desk or conference table.Mirroring is another nonverbal sign of warmth. You may not realize it, but when you are dealing with people you like or agree with, you’ll automatically begin to match their stance, arm positions and facial expressions. It’s a way of signaling that you are connected and engaged.Facing people directly when they’re talking is also crucial. It shows that you are totally focused on them. Even rotating your shoulders a quarter turn away signals a lack of interest and makes the other person feel as if their opinions are being discounted. Of course, giving others your complete attention when they are speaking is one of the warmest, most inclusive signals you can send.3. Positive emotionsA business simulation experiment at Yale University gave two groups of people the assignment of deciding how much of a bonus to give each employee from a set fund of money. Each person in the g roup was to get as large a bonus as possible for certain employees, while being fair to the entire employee population. In one group, the conflicting agendas led to stress and tension, while in the second group, everyone ended up feeling good about the result. The difference was in the “plants” â€" actors who had been secretly assigned to each group. In the first group, the actor was negative and downbeat - and in the second, positive and upbeat. The emotional tone of the meetings followed the lead of each actor â€" although none of the group members understood why his or her feelings had shifted.Positive and negative emotions are highly infectious, and instantaneously “catching” them is a universal human phenomenon. In a study at the University of Tubingen in Germany, people were shown photos of happy or sad faces on a computer then asked questions to gauge their emotional reactions. Subjects reported corresponding emotions to the photos â€" even when the pictures lasted on ly fractions of a second. In business, however, the power of emotion is often discounted. We tend to believe that people think logically and act rationally. Steeped in this belief, leaders quantify everything they can in order to present information in ways that will help team members make objective decisions. But according to neurologist and author Antonio Damasio, the center of our conscious thought (the prefrontal cortex) is so tightly connected to the emotion-generating amygdala, that no one makes decisions based on pure logic. Damasio’s research makes it clear that logical reasoning is usually no more than a way to justify emotional choices.Think of it this way: We are all part of an emotional chain-reaction effect. As a leader without authority, you can influence and inspire your team by understanding that emotions drive performance. Worry, stress, and fear decrease physical and mental energy and impair mental agility. Positive emotions â€" optimism, enthusiasm, gratitude â€" increase energy, learning and motivation. In reaction to changing realities, many business schools are revisiting their offerings to see if they still have relevance in the 21st century. Consider Harvard Business School, the blue-chip brand of all MBA programs, which used 2008 (its centennial year) to convene worldwide experts on business education and plot its directions for the next 100 years. The results: Deans and recruiters said that MBAs, in general, needed better communication skills, increased self-awareness and an enhanced capacity for introspection and empathy.Sound familiar?Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach. 7 Signs Its Time for you to Leave Your Job - The Muse

7 Signs Its Time for you to Leave Your Job - The Muse 7 Signs Its Time for you to Leave Your Job - The Muse We all get content at times, especially at a job that pays decently well and comes with a good group of co-workers. Maybe your job isn’t what you really want to do for the rest of your life, but you start convincing yourself, “This is fine- it’s not my dream job, but it’ll do for now.” And there’s nothing wrong with feeling content or comfortable at your job. But keep in mind that being “content” can easily lead to complacency- and that’s the danger zone. Complacency tends to generate excuses (“I’ll put up with this just for a few more months,” or “I just don’t have time to do a job search right now”) and leads us to settle (“This job will do for now,” or “Maybe I don’t need to be a VP [or fill in your blank dream job here]”). Worst of all, complacency will eventually lead to fear. And fear holds us back. I have seen too many smart and talented friends and colleagues who have stayed in just-OK jobs. When they do decide to move on, they’ve been out of the job market for so long that they can’t even take that first step to update their resume- let alone apply for jobs. They’re gripped by fear of re-entering a different job market than the one they last recall. They have almost forgotten what it’s like to go on interviews. They feel inadequate compared to their peers and think the train has already passed them by. These feelings of fear can quickly get overwhelming, and the easy way out is often to postpone the job search, to ignore the matter at hand- and to spend more time in a less-than-dream-job. So, if there’s one piece of advice I could give to anyone who wants to advance professionally, it’s this: Do not get complacent. In fact, make time to regularly check in with yourself about your career happiness and goals and consider whether it might be time to leave your job and make your next move. What are the telltale signs that it’s time to seriously consider leaving your current job and pursuing the next thing? Here are seven strong signals. 1. You’re Living the Status Quo If you’ve been at the same company and position without any advancement or promotion for the past three years- and you want to continue moving your career forward- it’s time to look elsewhere. Even in a large organization where promotions are tough to come by, you should be able to make some sort of upward movement within this time frame. 2. You Don’t Get Feedback If your direct manager doesn’t provide feedback on your performance- or the feedback is generic and thus difficult to take action on- it’s pretty tough to learn what it takes to move up within your organization or grow as a professional. The best managers are engaged with your career development and regularly offer advice and guidance- and if yours doesn’t, you owe it to yourself to look elsewhere. 3. You’re Not Learning If your learning curve has flattened out or you’re really not feeling challenged, this may signal a need to move on. You may not be learning something new every day on the job, but you should be improving upon your core skills and picking up new ones. You often have to take this into your own hands, of course- asking to be involved in a new project, signing up for courses you’re interested in, or attending a relevant conference or seminar in your discipline, for example. But if these possibilities don’t exist at your current job, it’s a sign that the company is not serious about investing in your career development. READY TO MAKE A CAREER MOVE LIKE YESTERDAY? Trust us, we know the feeling. Check out Tons of Openings Now 4. There’s a Constant Exodus Do you find yourself going to a colleague’s going-away drinks way too frequently? Does everyone around you seem to be constantly updating their resumes and LinkedIn profiles? When you start noticing a pattern of disgruntled employees (especially the good ones) seeking exits and frequent departures, this usually indicates there are better places to work- and you probably have options. No, I’m not encouraging anyone to blindly follow the herd, but take it as a warning sign, and ask your departing pals why they chose to move on. Their responses may be applicable to your situation as well. 5. There’s Regular Restructuring If your company is regularly announcing a re-org or shuffling management around, this may indicate leadership issues or a shaky strategic direction. (A friend told me she has had four different bosses in the past year- this can’t be good.) Re-orgs can provide an opportunity to step up and shine; but more often than not, they signal turbulence. And more importantly, they create a challenging environment for your career development needs to get any attention. Your priorities, focus, and progress will inevitably be impacted. 6. Headhunters Want You Those annoying emails and calls from recruiters may not result in a new job- but don’t ignore them completely. A heavy volume of inbound calls and emails may indicate your industry is “hot” and companies are hiring (read: a great opportunity to move up in position and salary level). I usually consider these conversations as market research to see who’s hiring, what roles and functions are in need, and the average salary range for comparable jobs. 7. It Feels Like Time to Go Beyond these warning signs, don’t ignore what your gut is telling you. No one knows your work environment better than you do. And if you get the sense that you might be better off somewhere else, heed that inner voice and go exploring. Given that many of us spend over 40 hours per week at our jobs, you owe it to yourself to regularly evaluate your career situation. Even if you're perfectly happy at your current job, make it a habit to check in with yourself (or with a trusted buddy, if that’s helpful) at least twice a year. Not only is it a good opportunity to review your accomplishments (and get in the habit of regularly updating your resume!), but you’ll also force yourself to gauge the market conditions within your industry. Best of all, going through this process will mean you’ll either find more satisfaction out of your current job- or you’ll discover new opportunities and move on to the next big thing.
